Eagle Watching
Daddy, Mommy and I went for a ride up the Great River Road in Alton, Illinois to see the Bald Eagles that visit there during the winter. The Bald Eagle is our national symbol, you know. I may be a German girl, but I know some stuff, too.
First, Dad wanted to stop at McDonald's to get some lunch. Hooray! I love McDonald's. Daddy ordered me my very own bag of french fries. Yum! And Mom gave me some of her hamburger. Boy oh boy. Now I was ready for some serious eagle watching.
We crossed over the bridge into Illinois. The river was full of ice. In fact, it was so icy there were two barges stuck in the ice. Bummer. Mom took photos of them and of all the ice piled up in the river. Then we noticed all these black dots out on the ice, so we stopped to take a look. The black dots were eagles sitting on the ice looking for fish. Dad and I got out to stretch our legs and take a little walk.
We drove down the Great River Road a short distance when we saw a lot of cars stopped along the road. We stopped too and Mom said there were seven or eight eagles sitting in the trees above the road. She got out to take some photos. Gee, those eagles are pretty big. I stayed inside with Dad where it was safe and warm.
Not that I'm afraid of a large, fierce looking bird who outweighs me by, well, a lot.
We continued on down the road and saw lots of eagles in the trees and sitting out on the ice. We stopped along the way at a small park next to the river and got to watch an eagle flying close by us. Mom had brought some snacks (thanks, Mom!) and we had a little picnic in the truck and watched the river go by. Ahhh, a warm lap and a snack--that's fine living if you ask me.
